TMD, aka TMJ

TMD – Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction

If you have this problem and someone starts to say T – M before they get any further your ears perk up.  As nearly everyone that has this problem is looking for more information on what to do to get relief and the topic is rarely off their mind or should we say their jaw.

When this first starts it can present with excruciating jaw pain or a jaw in a locked open or closed position, but most likely it started in a more subtle way.  There may have been headaches, grinding of the teeth at night, tension in the face or jaw, face pain, pressure or pain in the sinuses, eye strain, or squinting.

TMD, aka TMJ

I have to arch an eyebrow whenever it’s said that someone with TMD just needs to relax.  I have found that the word ‘RELAX’ causes immediate tension in the body.  Tension in the body is not usually a voluntary/conscious response; it is far more often an involuntary/unconscious response.  With involuntary responses you are not consciously causing them, but you are being told that you can control them.  Frustration sets in with the action-then-reaction response over and over again.  With the ReCAPS System™ techniques, you do not have to try and ‘RELAX’ because the tension is resolved.

The cause of all TMD is not known.  Some of the common treatments are: to wear a mouth guard (which protects your teeth, but you can still clench while it is in, meaning that the muscular/fascial tension continues), to the realignment of the bite through braces, to the grinding of teeth. These all have good effects and can resolve the problem, but sometimes the myofascial pain continues even after the bite has been realigned. Worst case scenario, there is the very invasive surgery where the jaw is broken to align the bite and the joint. We have seen patients that are Still In Pain after the surgery, and the ReCAPS System™ has resolved their pain as well.

We have a unique approach (ReCAPS System™) to the treatment of TMD that has been successful for nearly 20 years.  This is a non-invasive approach that works with the vascular, fascial, muscular and nervous systems in the body as well as ergonomics, postural distortions and perpetuating factors of daily life. Our system can fix the myofascial component of TMD.

But of the very most importance, you can tell a positive change from the very first treatment session.  The ReCAPS System™ has resolved this problem many times and it can resolve yours.
